Plans have been submitted to create another three padel courts at Powerleague Paisley as demand for the sport continues to grow.

The company behind the facility at Anchor Grounds in Blackhall Street has confirmed it hopes to make adjustments at the site for this purpose.

North Planning and Development has presented a request for planning permission in relation to the proposed project on behalf of its client.

The Glasgow-based agent outlined the detail behind the suggested development in a letter sent in with the application last month.

It said: “This application seeks full planning permission for works to provide three new padel tennis courts, together with associated court enclosure, lighting and canopy on an area of an existing seven-a-side football pitch.

“The proposal also involves the creation of a new five-a-side pitch and reprovision of the existing seven-a-side pitch to the north-west corner of the site.

“As a result, the development equates to use of one five-a-side outdoor sports pitch to be reused for padel. Located to the west of the existing padel courts, similarly, two of the padel courts will be doubles sizes and one will be for singles use.

“Each court will have a replacement synthetic playing surface enclosed by clear glazed panels with mesh fencing and replacement floodlights. The associated canopy will stand separate to the padel court structures and finished in a translucent opal fabric.

“The proposed canopy does not fully enclose each court but is designed to allow use of the padel courts all year round and during all weather.”

Padel is a fast-paced racket sport, often described as a mix between tennis and squash, and is considered one of the world’s fastest growing.

If approved by Renfrewshire Council, the three courts will complement the four already in place at Powerleague Paisley after their launch last year.

North Planning and Development added: “The proposed development does not involve the loss of any designated open space and instead utilises space equivalent to a five-a-side pitch, the demand for which is decreasing.

“Provision of additional padel courts will meet local demand within the community and contribute to health and wellbeing across Renfrewshire.”

Last week, the local authority notified neighbours of the site about the plans and invited them to comment if they wished to do so.

A decision on the application, which is expected to be made by planning officers, will be confirmed at a later date.
