The consensus among reviewers is that this is largely a good thing — but we’ve since seen some players bemoan Saros’ relative lack of mystery. And branching from that, we’ve read plenty of criticism regarding the game’s story (rampant misinformation aside).
We won’t spoil anything here, but this is the kind of stuff that does bubble to the surface of sequel discourse. We saw almost the exact same thing happen with Ghost of Yotei, a fellow first-party sequel that also sought to build on an already well-received foundation.
And so we simply have to ask: is Saros better than Returnal? Is it everything that a successor to Returnal should be, or does it drop the ball?
We think this one’s particularly interesting because Returnal itself marked a significant change in direction for Housemarque — a studio that was once known for ‘smaller’ arcade-style shoot-’em-up titles before being snapped up by Sony.
Saros is the team’s second attempt at pushing this intense third-person action formula, and we’re left wondering whether you think it does enough to take it to the next level.
So, is Saros the sequel that Returnal deserves? Vote in our polls, and then take aim in the comments section below.
