Thales has test-fired the FLP-t 150 ballistic missile in partnership with the Ariane Group. France is taking radical steps to separate itself from the US. This includes efforts like replacing Microsoft Office with a domestic alternative, as well as the Thales X-Fire and the FLP-t 150 in replacement for the M270 MLRS.

Thales (Euronext Paris: HO) and the Ariane Group have test-fire the FLP-t 150 ballistic missile, according to a May 12 press release. The test confirmed the design choices, technologies, and performance envelope of the missile, Thales states.

The munition has a range exceeding 150 km and is capable of terminal manoeuvres, the release states. This indicates that the FLP-t 150 can adjust its flight path on its final descent to a target according to updated information. No details were provided on the guidance system, which is being developed by the Ariane Group. However, to hit a moving target, the FLP-t 150 would need an EO/IR or radar seeker.

Otherwise, it will be capable of hitting static targets presumably with some level of accuracy in GNSS denied targeting situations. After all, the Ariane Group did develop the M51 nuclear ballistic missiles used in France’s deterrent. Ariane is also responsible for the propellant, with Thales managing the overall system and launcher.

In flight, the missiles apogee reaches “several tens of kilometres,” and it can manoeuvre in its boost phase, the release states. Additionally, the missile travels at “largely supersonic speeds.” Few further specifics were provided on the munition’s performance. However, because it is a replacement for the 227 mm Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) family of munitions (MFOM), it can be assumed that the FLP-t 150 can at least match the extended range variants of the guided MLRS.

As France continues its drive to reduce its reliance on American equipment, Thales is also responsible for developing a new rocket launcher. This platform will be known as X-Fire and is expected to conduct its first test firings at the end of May 2026.

Thales states that X-Fire is compatible with the FLP-t 150 as well as “foreign munitions.” This could indicate compatibility with the MFOM, which would enable France to use up any remaining stocks. However, other industry reporting in April this year indicates that the US has not approved MFOM integration. So, the reference to foreign munitions could also mean compatibility with the Hanwha Systems Chunmoo family of rockets, or those developed by Elbit Systems.

From the concept imagery the X-Fire will employ an 8×8 truck from Soframe. It has what appears to be space for at least eight rockets in the launch module to the rear of the cab. Crew is likely 2-3 and the cab appears to be armoured. It will replace the M270s from Lockheed Martin, which are tracked and known as Lance-Roquettes Multiple in French service. This will bring most of the French vehicle fleet onto wheeled platforms, leaving just the Leclerc and its supporting vehicles on tracks, as well as the Bv 206 fleet.

Thales states that the X-Fire will carry its TopStar CRPA satellite navigation receiver and will be compatible with the ATLAS artillery fire control system.

Calibre comment: The future of European long-range strike?

Vincent Pery, the Director of Defence Programmes at the Ariane Group said: “The FLP-t 150 opens a new perspective for establishing a conventional ballistic sector that addresses tactical, operational, and strategic capability needs.” This implies further development work towards larger missiles serving as analogues to the US Precision Strike Missile or the CTM-290 from Hanwha. These missiles have ranges in excess of hundreds of kilometres carrying very large warheads and are currently a capability gap for most of Europe.

Developing and fielding short-range ballistic missiles as well as tactical rocket systems in Europe would go a long way to building European sovereignty in defence. However, these systems are expensive and rely on mass-production to keep costs manageable. It follows that Thales and France will be looking for export customers to meet some of the costs of achieving this. However, many European countries have procured rocket systems since 2021. A rough count indicates at least 12 European countries, including Ukraine, have ordered new systems since 2018, totalling some 600 launchers. As a result, the window for Thales to secure some European market share is surely closing.
