Dronfield financial planners, Belmayne, are welcoming a new specialist to the team who will be using his experience in telecommunications to help clients from similar backgrounds.

Matt Spivey joins the independent practice as a trainee financial planner, after spending the last 25 years in sales roles for firms such as Vodafone.

Being made redundant in 2025 was the catalyst for Matt’s career change. He decided to qualify as a financial planner and set about gaining a Diploma in Investment Advice from the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI). He then built his own website to articulate his ethos and ambitions for the future.

Matt caught the attention of fellow Belmayne financial planner, Alex Napier, via The Real Advisor Podcast (TRAP). In an episode in January, one of the hosts mentioned Matt by name and the effort he was making to stand out.

Alex said:

“I am very conscious of how important it is for financial planners to find a firm that genuinely aligns with their view of the profession and with Belmayne’s growth ambitions in mind, I reached out to Matt for an initial chat. I was impressed with his work and as luck would have it, he was local too.

“Matt has a healthy appetite to do well and an approach that genuinely complements his previous experience. I am delighted he has chosen to join Belmayne and excited about what he brings to the team. I’d like to express my gratitude to the TRAP team for the role they play in connecting people across our profession. Stories like Matt’s are a great example of the positive impact this kind of community can have.”

Under the guidance of Belmayne partner, Ben Smalley, Matt is now studying to become a Chartered Financial Planner and aims to achieve competent adviser status within the next 12 months.

Alan Smith, one of the TRAP co-hosts, added:

“I was delighted to hear Matt has secured a role at Belmayne – a proper financial planning firm. This is evidence that if you apply a thoughtful and systematic approach when undertaking a career change, you can secure an ideal-fit role. Congratulations to all involved.”
