Work has started on an unused part of land next to St Columba’s and Woodmill high schools.

Fife Council approved the plans last summer for the six-hole course at Dunfermline Learning Campus which will be open to all.

An update confirmed work was underway and explained: “Park Golf is a form of golf that makes it inclusive and accessible for those of all abilities and ages without taking away all the fun competition from the normal game.”

The plans for the six-hole course show each hole featuring astroturf greens and tee areas, grass fairways and concrete platform tee boxes.

It’s being created in the south east corner of the campus – an area that was initially set aside for a community growing plot but will now become a sports facility.

The areas surrounding the holes will be planted with wild flowers, shrubs and a mix of trees with timber knee rails to separate parts of the course.

The council previously said that material from the old schools, which were demolished last year, would be used in the construction of the facility.

The site is around 3,000 square metres in size.

The council said more information, regarding opening dates, the operation of the site and opening dates, will follow as the course takes shape.

Park Golf originated in Japan in 1983 and is a simple and safe version of the game that requires only a mallet-style club and a hard, hockey-sized ball.

Played on shorter courses in parks and gardens, it’s inexpensive and easy to learn, making it suitable for all ages and skill levels.

When the plans were approved last June, Scott Fenton, team manager for community use in West Fife, told the Press: “It will be free to use for the schools and community groups.

“It is also hoped to encourage families to come along and play for a small fee.

“The potential for this facility to enhance the already strong links the campus has with the community is huge.

“It’s a great development for the campus and wider community.”

Drainage will be installed and the course will be secured by fencing, with gated access to the north and south.

There’ll be no need to enter school grounds.

Dunnikier Park Community Golf, in collaboration with Fife Golf Trust, introduced Park Golf (or Park Gowf as they’ve called it) to Scotland with the establishment of a six-hole course in Kirkcaldy in 2022.

Further courses have opened at Capshard Primary School in Kirkcaldy and at Craigtoun Park in St Andrews, there are also plans to create one at Lochore Meadows Country Park.
