According to organisers the event has grown into one of the UK’s largest free outdoor cinema weekends since launching in 2011.

This year’s programme opens on Friday with a “Swayze-Night!” line-up including The Outsiders, Dirty Dancing and a 35th anniversary screening of Point Break.

Saturday’s screenings include family titles such as Zootropolis 2, The Adventures of Tintin and Wicked: For Good.

A screening of Back to the Future will also take place, featuring a replica of the franchise’s DeLorean time machine on display.

Sunday’s schedule includes Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, Labyrinth, F1 and a 15th anniversary screening of Bridesmaids.

Organisers said all screenings will include subtitles, while selected films will feature audio description to improve accessibility.

Entry is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Emily Campbell Johnston, senior manager of marketing and communications for Essential Edinburgh, said: “Since our first free film event in 2011, Square Cinema has developed into one of the largest free outdoor cinema events in the UK.

“It is always fabulous fun and offers a unique and exciting communal film experience, accessible to all.”
