On Saturday, members of the Royal Company of Archers will compete for the Silver Arrow at Musselburgh Racecourse.

This historic event, first recorded in 1603, actually precedes the formation of the Royal Company of Archers.

However, since 1676, the annual contest has been restricted to members of the Royal Company.

The participants are expected to arrive at the racecourse at 1.30pm, with the shoot occurring afterwards, and the coveted trophy presentation happening at about 5pm.

This year’s event has the added significance of marking 350 years since the formation of the Royal Company of Archers.

The Royal Company of Archers will exercise their rights as Freemen of the Burgh by parading through the town.

The parade, scheduled to start at 5.30pm, begins from Musselburgh Racecourse and heads to the Brunton Hall via Millhill to Linkfield Road, High Street, Bridge Street and North High Street.

Police Scotland will control traffic throughout the parade.
