Who says looking regal has to take hours? Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has just proved otherwise. While the royal has certainly had her turn with intricate hairstyles, her latest look, a simple braid, proves that even the easiest styles can look just as polished.

Yesterday, Sophie didn’t let the unpredictable May showers deter her from attending the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Duchess looked elegant as ever, somehow managing to make layering multiple coats look effortlessly chic. Clearly, she came prepared – and that went for her hair, too.

Sophie opted for a chic, easy braid

Sophie opted for one of the most classic hairstyles in the book: an easy three-strand plait, a style that can withstand whatever the British weather throws at it. Her blonde locks were swept back to the nape of her neck and effortlessly woven down her back.

The beauty of a braid, as Sophie has proved, is that it works whatever the weather. During spring showers, a braid helps keep hair beautifully intact, rather than turning into a frizzy disaster (we’ve all been there). But it works just as well on sunnier days, too. With a potential heatwave next week, a braid is the perfect way to stay cool while keeping your locks neatly out of the way.

It’s a hairstyle that anyone with longer locks is likely well acquainted with – so much so that we’d argue it often gets overlooked. But, safe to say, it’s firmly back on our radar thanks to Sophie.

The humble style seems to be a royal favourite at the moment. Earlier this year, Catherine, Princess of Wales, embraced a DIY braid too – twisting her long brunette locks to the side.

Consider this proof that a polished look doesn’t have to be high-maintenance, expensive or require a full-blown arm workout.
