
Here’s a roundup of some the main events taking place over the coming week in South Leeds.
We start this week in Beeston with a day of art-based fun and frolics ‘On The Corner’ organised by BasementArtsProject. As well as finding the ear of the Listening City, you can help Kate Jennings work on her open air canvas. It’s all part of Situation Leeds. Activities run from 10am-10pm at the corner, off Tunstall Road and Burton Terrace, LS11 5JH.
On a more serios note there is a one day Self Defence Course taking place at Cranmore & Raylands Community Centre in Belle Isle, LS10 4AW. Run by Just Self Defence the course for anyone 13 to 80 any fitness level and focuses not on fighting, but on what happens in real life. Email: justselfdefence@gmail.com for information and booking.
Next to Belle Isle where there is a group litter pick taking place on the estate from 11am-1:30pm. Meet at BITMO’s Gate centre, Aberfield Gate, LS10 3QH and return afterwards for pay-as-you-feel toasties and tea. All equipment provided.
Staying at the GATE, from 1-4pm the Belle Isle Repair Café will be back at BITMO’s GATE (LS10 3QH). The fixers and stitchers will be on hand to give your goods a second lease of life, you can even get your knives and scissors sharpened. At 3pm there will be a planning meeting for this year’s Belle Isle Gala. There will also be winter coats and tea and toasties will be on offer. From 1:30pm there will be a Councillor surgery.
Romeo.Juliet is not a love story. The tragedy of a young man radicalised into extreme violence, and the thirteen-year-old girl his actions drive to suicide has been misunderstood for centuries. It’s on at Slung Low’s Warehouse in Holbeck on Saturday at 7:30pm, pay-what you-decide. Tickets at www.slunglow.org/shows Age advisory 14+
The Friends of Middleton Park invite you for a Song and Dance on Sunday with Hands Across Ceilidh Band and the Leeds People’s Choir. 2-4pm on the bandstand near the visitor centre.
Better Beeston are holding a community litter pick on Sunday afternoon. Meet on Maud Avenue at 3pm, equipment provided.
Leeds United entertain Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premiership, kicking off at 3pm on Sunday. You can expect the usual heavy traffic and parking issues around Beeston, Holbeck and Cottingley before and after the match.
There are a host of Police Contact Points this week. This is a chance to raise concerns or ask questions of the Leeds South Neighbourhood Policing Team in an informal setting. On Tuesday they will be at Hunslet Community Hub & Library from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday they are at Dewsbury Road Community Hub & Library. Then on Thursday they will be at Beeston Community Hub & Library on Town Street.
Support, rest and relaxation are on offer to survivors of domestic abuse on Tuesday at the first of this month’s Survivor-led Sisterhood meeting. St George’s Centre, Middleton, 12-2pm.
On Tuesday BasementArtsProject will also be opening a new exhibition as part of Situation Leeds by Artist Lane Shipsey. Hard Shoulder Motorway City will be an intimate series of portraits of the area that is South Leeds. From 5:30pm at 28 Back Burton Terrace, LS11 5JH, free.
SEN-tastic are hosting a drop-in for parents and carers of children with special educational needs on Thursday. They offer advice, support or just an ear to listen. 12:30-2:30pm at St Luke’s Church on Malvern Road, Beeston Hill, LS11 8PD.
And finally this week, St Luke’s Tenants & Residents Association will be holding their bi-monthly meeting on Thursday at St Luke’s Church, Malvern Road, LS11 8PD, starting at 6:30pm.
