Mann joined City from Leeds and also played for Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United during his career.

Initially joining Bristol City as a striker, he switched to midfield under manager Alan Dicks.

He was part of the side that won promotion from Division Two in 1976, playing 36 games during the campaign.

But six years later, with the club facing financial ruin, Mann – along with Geoff Merrick, Gerry Sweeney, Dave Rodgers, Peter Aitken, Chris Garland, Trevor Tainton and Julian Marshall – agreed to cancel his contract and leave the club to prevent it from going under.

The octet were hailed as local heroes in the subsequent years and there is a plaque commemorating what they did at Ashton Gate.
