Leeds United are reportedly open to selling Willy Gnonto this summer as Bundesliga side Freiburg consider a summer transfer approach.
United’s final home game of the season awaits on Sunday with a home test against Champions League chasing Brighton.
Daniel Farke has already achieved his goal of keeping Leeds in the Premier League. He’s done so having made some tough calls on certain players, ultimately getting over the line in the end.
Leeds united consider selling Willy Gnonto as Freiburg consider approach – Florian Plettenberg
One player who has seen his involvement frustratingly limited this season has been Willy Gnonto. A mixture of our three-at-the-back setup and Farke’s lineup preference are two key reasons.
Now, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg reports that Bundesliga outfit Freiburg are weighing up a move for the Italian international.
It’s claimed that talks between Gnonto’s representatives and the German club have already been taking place before the season’s end.
A deal is described as “difficult”, but it’s also noted that United are open to Gnonto leaving the club. A sale would surely be preferred, but Plettenberg claims that a loan with an obligation to buy could be on the cards too.
I have given up on Willy Gnonto – He’s got no future at Leeds United for some reason
It’s such a peculiar situation. Almost every time Gnonto plays, Leeds fans are left impressed by what we’ve seen from him.
However, he’s never been able to change Farke’s mind this season on starting often. Now, we’ve got a depreciated asset that looks likely to leave this summer.
Freiburg would be a smart move for Gnonto, a side looking to qualify for Europe in the Bundesliga. That said, it’s such a shame it’s not workign at Leeds.
Everyone knows he’s supremely talented, but for whatever reason, he hasn’t been able to kick on.
If we get good money for him, I’d consider this a worthwhile exit. But, loaning him out doesn’t seem particularly wise for this summer.
