Hearts knew victory over City in the capital in their penultimate game would secure glory a day after the men’s team agonisingly missed out on a first top-flight title in 66 years.

But it looked like the weight of history on their shoulders affected Hearts as they were unable to play the free-flowing, attacking football that has propelled them into this position.

An incredibly cagey first half offered up little for either side, though both did go close after the break.

Lauren Wade’s teasing free-kick was nearly stabbed in by the stretching Erin Husband, but the Hearts youngster just couldn’t extend enough for contact.

Moments later, City substitute Lisa Forrest missed the target with a diving header from close range.

The hosts threw everything at the search for a late winner, but it was City who looked more threatening on the counter, with Emily Whelan calling Rachael Johnstone into a smart stop.
