Today, the joint venture between Fastned, ultra-rapid charging provider, and Places for London, Transport for London’s property company, has gained planning approval for London’s largest ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Ealing. 

Opening early next year, the hub will provide a major boost to London’s and the UK’s EV infrastructure and play a crucial role in enabling zero-emission travel throughout the Capital. 

The new ultra-rapid charging hub, powered entirely by renewable energy, will feature 36 bays that offer EV drivers the capability to charge up to 100 miles of range in just 5 minutes. Conveniently located off the North Circular (A406) near Hanger Lane, a key London arterial road, it will serve hundreds of drivers daily. 

Fastned and Places for London’s Hanger Lane hub will feature a retail space and restroom facilities, offering essential amenities for drivers. Benches and a playground outside will help create a welcoming community space, giving families and local residents a place to pause while children can play safely as drivers recharge. Fastned’s signature yellow solar canopies will provide shelter in inclement weather, alongside lighting and CCTV to ensure safety on site. 

With around 64 per cent of outer London households lacking access to off-street parking, many drivers rely on public charging infrastructure, particularly in urban areas. Fastned has designed the Hanger Lane hub, ensuring it meets the needs of local residents, commuters, visitors and commercial operators such as local businesses and taxi or private hire cars. The hub provides accessible charging for vehicles of all sizes, from cars and taxis to vans and smaller trucks, helping address the limited opportunities for private charging at homes or commercial depots due to London’s space constraints. 

Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Mete Coban said: “This new, rapid charging hub, the largest in London, will support hundreds of Londoners who have already made the transition to electric vehicles. 

“There are more than 27,900 public electric vehicle charge points in London – over a third of the UK’s total charging network – and, working with partners like Fastned, we can continue to grow our network and support many more Londoners to switch to cleaner, greener vehicles.” 

The hub will also provide a crucial solution for businesses transitioning to electric fleets, particularly those operating from the nearby Park Royal industrial estate, London’s largest area of Strategic Industrial Land.

During construction of the Hanger Lane hub, work experience placements will give local people the chance to explore careers and develop skills in this fast-growing industry. The partnership also offers apprenticeships, employment opportunities, and community outreach, helping to upskill Londoners and support the city’s transition to electric vehicles.

Fastned’s hubs are designed to be easy, safe and comfortable for everyone, with inclusivity built in from the start. Wheelchair-accessible bays, clear circulation paths and features that support drivers. Extra-wide bays make parking and manoeuvring simple, while suspended cable systems remove the need to lift heavy charging cables. Bright, open layouts with clear sightlines, high-quality lighting and CCTV coverage help create a welcoming, accessible environment. 

With ambitions for 25 sites across London by 2030, including Hatton Cross, Canning Town, Tottenham Hale and East Finchley, the joint venture is accelerating the rollout of accessible public charging hubs to meet rising EV demand and contribute to the Mayor of London’s vision for a greener capital.

Our Travel Demand Survey in 2024 showed that most households in London, including 93 per cent in inner London and 64 per cent in outer London, do not have access to off-street parking in a driveway or garage London’s EV transition.

The number of electric vehicles on the road in London is projected to rise to between Im to 1.4m by 2030, making up 34% to 49% of London’s car and van fleet. Up to 40,0000 publicly accessible chargers are expected to be needed to meet this demand. London leads the way in the uptake of EV vehicles in the UK, with around 193,000 plug-in electric cars and vans already registered in the capital. The city has almost 28,000 charge points to date, which is over 30% of all EV charging infrastructure across the UK and more than any other UK region.
