Today marks exactly 30 years since the body of an unidentified man was discovered on the banks of the River Avon in Bristol.

On Sunday, May 19, 1996, the man, believed to have fallen from the nearby Clifton Suspension Bridge, was found with an extraordinary collection of belongings. Despite the highly distinctive nature of these items, his identity remains a complete mystery three decades later.

However, a cold case charity believes the breakthrough could lie in a specific Bristol neighbourhood after receiving crucial new sightings from the public.

The St Pauls connection

In 2023, volunteer investigators with Locate International, a charity dedicated to solving cold cases of missing and unidentified people, released a new living depiction of how the man would have looked.

Following that appeal, investigators were contacted by members of the public who recognised the man, stating they regularly saw him in the St Pauls area of Bristol.

Charity bosses are now making an urgent appeal to anyone with links to St Pauls to look closely at his description and image.

The clues: Batman, ‘Utopia’ and a photo from his youth

“Clifton Suspension Bridge Man” was carrying a bizarre and specific mix of literature, pop culture items, and personal effects when he died.

Among his belongings was a passport-sized photograph of himself as a younger man, showing how his appearance had changed over time. He was also found with:

  • A handwritten cardboard sign: Reading ‘Sleeping rough, thank you’
  • A red penny whistle
  • A copy of Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’: A 16th-century satire missing its outer cover, with the words ‘West Glamorgan County Council’ stamped on the first page
  • A Holy Bible
  • A paperback book: ‘The Greatest Batman Stories’
  • Maps: A Great Britain A-Z map and a Eurohike Adventure guide map
  • Personal items: Silk Cut cigarettes, a blank Barclays giro slip

Description of the man

At the time of his death, his appearance had aged beyond the passport photo he carried. He is described as:

  • Ethnicity: White, of medium build.
  • Age: Estimated between 25 and 35 years old.
  • Height & Features: Approximately 6ft (185cm) tall with blue eyes and light brown hair.
  • Clothing: A black sweatshirt and jacket, blue ‘Lee Riders’ jeans, and brown boots.

Investigating teams thought they had cracked the case following the 2023 appeal when a member of the public provided a highly promising name. While a number of key details matched perfectly, investigators ultimately had to discount the identity.

“We will continue to work on reuniting him with his identity until all possible leads are extinguished. We are very confident that there are plenty of people in and around Bristol who knew him,” said Mark Greenhalgh, Locate International CEO.

Investigators hope that remembering what was happening on that exact weekend 30 years ago might jog the memory of someone who frequented St Pauls or interacted with him.

  • On the TV: That Sunday afternoon, Olivier Panis won his only ever Monaco Grand Prix. The night before, Ireland’s Eimear Quinn won the Eurovision Song Contest with The Voice .
  • Football: The weekend before, Manchester United had beaten Liverpool 1-0 in the FA Cup Final thanks to an Eric Cantona goal.
  • In Bristol: The front page of the Bristol Evening Post that Saturday was about guards being moved at a travellers’ camp, and the city was preparing to host the International Festival of the Sea the following weekend.
