Liverpool could be set to lose some homegrown players this summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold has already confirmed his departure, and there may be interest in second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez.
Premier League clubs can name a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players in their squads each season. To be considered homegrown, a player must have spent three years at an English or Welsh club for three years before turning 21. Those players come at a premium price, and Liverpool may need to sign at least one during the summer transfer window. However, the Reds have the perfect potential bargain in Jeremie Frimpong.
Although the Bayer Leverkusen star is Dutch and plays in Germany, he would count as homegrown in the Premier League. That is because he spent nine years in the Manchester City academy.
Frimpong arrived in England aged seven and spent the next 12 years in the north-west before moving to Scottish Premiership outfit Celtic. Nine of those years were spent in City’s academy.
Now 24, Frimpong would help Liverpool meet their homegrown player quota, should he arrive at Anfield in the summer. It is widely reported that he has a £29.7million release clause that becomes active at the end of the season.
With Xabi Alonso set to join Real Madrid, Frimpong and Leverkusen’s other best players may also be tempted to explore their options. The opportunity to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool may be too good to turn down.
Indeed, The Athletic report that Frimpong would be keen on a move to Liverpool. The Premier League champions may explore a deal if they want a different profile of player at right-back following Alexander-Arnold’s departure.
Frimpong is more of a traditional wing-back. He can operate anywhere down the right wing and has even played as a No. 10 for Alonso’s Leverkusen. A talented dribbler with ferocious speed, Frimpong is also a very competent defender.
In Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal, Conor Bradley’s audition to replace Alexander-Arnold was mixed. The Northern Irishman enjoyed a positive first half, making strong challenges and being progressive in possession.
But Bradley struggled in the second half. If Liverpool want to source Alexander-Arnold’s replacement externally, Frimpong could be the ideal option. That he would help the Anfield outfit meet their homegrown quota is an added bonus.
