A black BMW has crashed in an Edinburgh street following a dramatic police chase as officers lock down the road.

Cops were reportedly chasing a car along Dalkeith Road, past the Royal Commonwealth Pool, at around 8am on the morning of Thursday, May 21, heading towards the city centre. However, it appeared to end in a smash on East Preston Street.

Footage taken by local commuters shows police racing to the scene, before the black BMW can be seen stopped half on the pavement outside Preston Street Primary School with its front bumper mangled, surrounded by police vehicles.

Further pictures shown to Edinburgh Live show a set of traffic lights next to the scene at an angle, with the pedestrian crossing display hanging down by wires. Debris also litters the pavement.

Multiple cop cars have been scrambled, with the road now closed in both directions. Buses have been diverted until further notice as a result, with some forced to turn around on their route to avoid the area.

An update from Lothian Buses said its services 2, 30, 33 and X33 were affected. It read: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Clerk Street, South Clerk Street and East Preston Street and are instead diverted via West Richmond Street and St Leonards Street in both directions until further notice.”
