No matter where you live in Scotland, you are unlikely to be too far from a tasty takeaway. Everyone has their own local favourite, whether it be a fish and chip shop, a Chinese, or an Indian.

If you are looking to try something different, however, there are also plenty of takeaways that specialise in more unique dishes. One business that opened its doors in March and is dedicated to potatoes was recently named the top takeaway in Scotland.

As we previously reported, Scotland’s Entertainment and Hospitality Awards were held earlier this month. And the prize for Best Takeaway was awarded to Spudbuds in Ayr.

Spudbuds is located on Alloway Street in the South Ayrshire town. It can be reached from Glasgow in approximately 50 minutes by car.

As its name suggests, the business specialises in baked potatoes. Customers can choose from either a baked potato or chunky chips for £5.

Visitors then select their butter of choice, with plain, garlic, and Cajun available. After this, they can choose from a selection of £1.50 regular fillings or £3 ‘super’ fillings.

Regular fillings include cheese, beans, tuna, bacon, and haggis. Meanwhile, among the super fillings available are chicken tikka curry, Thai chicken curry, BBQ pulled pork, and chilli con carne.

In addition to its main menu, Spudbuds also offers a wide range of alternatives. The takeaway has vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free menus.

Vegetarian fillings on offer include cheese, beans, Thai spicy beans, and coleslaw. Also available are vegetable curry, mac and cheese, plant-based chicken curry, and plant-based Cajun chicken mayo.

Meanwhile, among the vegan options are vegan cheese, beans, Thai spicy beans, and coleslaw. The other vegetarian fillings such as vegetable curry, mac and cheese, plant-based chicken curry, and plant-based Cajun chicken mayo are also vegan-friendly.

Spudbuds also offers a children’s menu for customers under the age of 12. It consists of half a potato or half a portion of chips and one classic filling.

In addition to taking home the Best Takeaway gong at the Entertainment and Hospitality Awards, Spudbuds has earned acclaim from customers. At the moment, it has an average rating of 4.8 out of five on Google based on 43 reviews.

One satisfied visitor shared: “Been waiting patiently for Scotland to have its own viral baked potato shop and it did not disappoint!

“My recommendation is to get ‘The Dirty’—pulled pork and mac n cheese on a potato! The Belter (Haggis one) was good too!”

A second posted: “Massive portion and restaurant quality Thai red curry! £12 for the spud with two cans of juice, I think its a good price for the quality of food I got. Will definitely be back! This is not your average baked potato.”

Another echoed: “Amazing food and service! It is 100 per cent worth the wait in the queue.

“Worth a trip from afar too as great value! We will be back!”
