Construction of the arena began in February 2011. However, in 2013, flames were reportedly seen rising from the partially constructed building.

40 firefighters attended to the blaze before it was determined that the fire was caused by ongoing welding work.

The venue was built by London-based architects Foster + Partners, who are known for creating breathtaking structures like Hong Kong’s Chep Lap Kok Airport and Glasgow’s iconic Armadillo.
