MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – State Senator London Lamar formally launched her campaign for Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District on Monday morning at Hickory Ridge Mall.
Lamar announced her bid to replace U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, who announced his retirement earlier this month after representing the district for decades. Cohen has endorsed Lamar’s campaign.
“I think people would want someone who stood firm, not just going with what the president says do, or is going to make a decision that takes away the sacrifices of so many folks who fought for equity in the voting system,” Lamar said.
Lamar’s campaign centers on affordability and expanding access to utility assistance, rental relief and SNAP benefits for Tennesseans across the district.
“Whether you’re in a rural, suburban, or urban area, all of us are having challenges around affording to just live we’re all in survival mode,” Lamar said. “I am going to prioritize strong schools, healthy families and safe communities, and those issues aren’t rural or urban or suburban issues alone, it’s everybody’s issues.”
Lamar said she will prioritize strong schools, safer communities and healthy families.
