There’s few experiences more challenging when you’re hangry that spending your lunch budget on something new and realising that actually, you hate it.
But while some Brummies will read the reviews of relative newcomer SushiDog – just opposite Sephora on the top floor of the Bullring – and trust in the rave write-ups and 4.7 star rating, others will need more convincing to try what is arguably an unusual concept.
SushiDogs are like burritos, but the wrap is sushi nori. A blend of the two dishes, and despite the name absolutely nothing to do with dogs, hot or otherwise.

Price wise, you’re looking at about £7.95 for a roll filled with tofu, and on the upper end of the scale, the spicy kimchi tuna option is £10.25, with rice bowl options if you’d rather – though they’re a little bit more expensive.
Sides come in the form of tater tots with Asian-inspired toppings, edemame and other morsels and there are a few tables just outside the restaurant, though the rolls are designed to grab-and-go for shoppers in a dash.
If you’ve been wanting to try it out, but can’t risk blowing £8 if you’re uncertain, it’s worth noting that SushiDog is celebrating its birthday on Thursday, May 28 and so the first 144 customers that pop in between 3pm and 5pm will get a free SushiDog.

It’s not just the Bullring shop taking part, the London stores are too, though Birmingham is the only one in the Midlands.
The only thing you have to do to redeem is get the SushiDog app and log in before you join the queue.
Then you’ll get a token which you can redeem against a SushiDog, sushi bowl or sushi salad, with one protein and avocado included.
If you fancy, you can buy drinks, mochi and cookies seperately.
Be sure to check all the terms and conditions before you go if you are planning to, they’re on the app but things to note in particular are that you have to stay in the queue, you can’t ‘build your own’ option and you can’t upgrade the product when you’re there.
Nor can you use any other vouchers or loyalty points, exchange tokens for cash and screenshots won’t be accepted.
Reviewing SushiDog on Google, an account claiming to be TV star Alison Hammond gave it five stars.
The user wrote: “The shrimp bowl and sushi roll is insane. Laina was so helpful and kind. Thanks so much.”
Another Google reviewer called Star Harper wrote: “Was extremely pleased when I visited SushiDog.
“All staff were super patient when I was ordering as it was my first time and I was curious. Staff were also lovely and friendly, all smiling and happy to serve all customers.”
