A man has died after being stopped by police on a Shropshire street.

The man was driving a car when he was asked to pull over in Willow Street in the centre of Oswestry at around 2pm on Tuesday (May 13).

The driver then stopped his vehicle, got out and collapsed.

The man then collapsed and became unresponsive and despite being given CPR before ambulance medics attended, he died.

West Mercia Police has now said it has referred itself to its professional standards department.

And a further referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the man’s death.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: “Earlier this afternoon (Tuesday 13 May) at around 2pm police indicated for a vehicle to pull over on Willow Street in Oswestry.

“The driver stopped the vehicle and got out, where he collapsed and became unconscious and unresponsive.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency workers, including officers at the scene who carried out CPR prior to the ambulance service attending, the man was sadly pronounced dead.”

The statement continued: “The incident has been referred to our professional standards department.

“And a referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
