Homes were evacuated after a fire involving a gas cylinder broke out in Manchester. Firefighters have begun their second day at the scene on Linnett Close, in Longsight, this morning (May 29).
Crews were called out to a fire involving an acetylene cylinder on an industrial unit at around 6pm last night (Thursday). Greater Manchester Police confirmed a number of properties were evacuated while crews worked at the scene.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said crews remained at the scene this morning ‘overseeing a cooling phase’ and ensuring the area is safe. A witness told the Manchester Evening News that residents were evacuated from a number of homes on nearby Lamb Close on Thursday due to safety concerns.

He said: “They were worried the acetylene tank was going to explode. Some people stood on the street, others went to stay with family.”
Images from the scene on Thursday evening show police had cordoned off an area close to the fire. An industrial yard could be seen being hosed down where the fire had broken out, with one fire engine in attendance.

In a statement, a GMFRS spokesperson said: “At just after 6pm this evening (Thursday, May 28), fire crews were called to attended a commercial premises on Linnett Close, Manchester. One fire engine from Gorton Community Fire Station attended the scene where firefighters extinguished a fire involving an acetylene cylinder in the open using one hose reel, a thermal imaging camera and a gas monitor.”
