A full day of music and tributes to Stone Roses legend Mani – here’s how Manichester all played out

Rock stars united on stage to pay their own personal tributes to Stone Roses legend Gary “Mani” Mounfield at the one-day music extravaganza Manichester. There were festival vibes as around 5,000 fans flocked to the Diecast venue in Manchester in scorching hot temperatures for the all-day event.

Entertainment kicked off just after 12noon with DJs and live music, while photos of Stone Roses and Primal Scream bass guitar legend Mani were played out on big screens throughout the day.

The big live performances started in the evening in the Beer Hall, with Starsalior frontman James Walsh, then tribute band Ultimate Stone Roses, Manchester band Puressence then indie rockers Cast – before a supergroup assembled for the big finale of the event just after 9.30pm.

What followed was a blistering set of some 19 songs that assembled musicians from a host of bands uniting to play some of Mani’s most famous songs, as well as songs that were loved by the Failsworth-born rock legend.

The supergroup was brought together by bassist Damon Minchella, who led the “Mani’s All Stars” group as they were announced on stage on Saturday night. The core band included Zak Starkey on drums, Danny Connors on guitar, Tom Manning on keys, percussion from Dalbir Singh and Baz Fratelli on bass alongside Damon. The band were also joined by former Stone Roses guitarist Aziz Ibrahim for a number of songs through the night.

Damon paid his tribute to Mani in announcing the supergroup, saying: “This is here a tribute to everyone we know and everyone we love, my best mate, he broke my heart but he also elevated it to the stars. So we’re going to do 19 songs for you with various musicians, we are the Mani All Stars.”

Starsailor frontman James Walsh kicked off the supergroup set with his band’s anthem Good Souls, before a rocking version of Primal Scream’s Movin’ on Up.

He was followed on stage by The Zutons’ Dave McCabe in fine voice to perform his band’s classic Valerie, before a mass singalong to Stone Roses anthem Made of Stone.

Slaughter and the Dogs’ Mick Rossi headed on to stage to tell his own memories of meeting Mani, and the special times they had together. He chose to sing two of Mani’s favourite songs with his tribute performance in the supergroup – The Temptations’ Get Ready, and Lou Reed’s Waiting for The Man.

Things got emotional for Manchester rock queen Rowetta as she paid her own special tribute with Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water which she said was both special to her and to her friend Mani. Former Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley delivered three of the band’s biggest hits on the night, while rock levels were ramped up when former Kasabian frontman headed on stage to perform the pounding beats of Club Foot and L.S.F before his cover version of Stone Roses’ Love Spreads.

Things came to an emotional finale with Joy Division and New Order star Peter Hook returning to stage (after an earlier DJ set) to perform Love Will Tear Us Apart as the supergroup returned.
