Vital Energi has signed a five-year contract with London Gatwick to deliver key elements of the airport’s £250 million decarbonisation programme.
The partnership will see Vital Energi eliminate natural gas use and decarbonise heat across 50 buildings, including the North and South terminals. The work supports London Gatwick’s goal to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
As part of the contract, Vital Energi will install low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps and upgrade heat infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and resilience. The airport will also begin generating heat on site, making it the first major UK airport to do so.
Cedric Laurier, chief technical officer at London Gatwick, said: “Our work with Vital Energi will play a critical role… and will mean we are the first major UK airport to generate heat on site.”
Vital Energi brings experience in delivering large-scale energy solutions and will use its in-house team of over 100 design engineers to support the project.
The contract forms a core part of Gatwick’s wider sustainability efforts, aimed at reducing its environmental impact as passenger numbers and operations continue to grow.
