Drivers in England have been told to switch off ‘stop’ and ‘start’ technology immediately. A top mechanic, Scotty Kilmer, reckons disabling start and stop tech in your car will “double” the engine life.
The YouTube content creator and top mechanic says the button found in almost all cars will “double the life” of an engine and branded it as the “dumbest thing” introduced in cars in recent years.
He said: “It’s a smart thing to do. Start/stop technology is the dumbest thing that’s come out in a long time. ‘Oh you get better gas mileage and you’re not polluting blah, blah, blah.

“Every time you start your car, 97 per cent of the wear is when you start the car so do you want to keep starting and stopping it, not if you want your car to last a long time.” He added: “It’s plain obsolescence, The engine will wear out faster, then they will sell you another car.”
“Of course [the manufacturers] love it, they don’t want the cars to last forever. It’s not like that’s going to break your car in five minutes, it takes tens and tens of thousands of miles for it to wear your engine. But it will wear your engine,” he added.
“You’re doing the best thing you possibly can, turn the stupid thing off every time you start the car so it doesn’t do it.” But a motorist said: “I think nothing of anything that guy has to say. As for auto off, I hate it.
“There is nothing more alarming while stopped than my engine shutting off. I drove some pretty rough cars when I was young and have anxiety filled memories trying to restart vehicles at intersections. No thank you.”
“Whether he knows how his stuff or not… how can you watch that guy? It’s like Guy Fieri’s country cousin, but instead of screaming at you about food, it’s cars,” another said.
Another said: “He is correct, more wear happens at start up but this is primarily during a cold start where its been sitting for a little bit and oil has had time to leak out of the bearing races.
“The couple mins at a light isn’t time for oil to leak out from the bearings where you get accelerated bearing wear imo.
“Id look at accelerated starter wear as a main concern, this is why i turn it off.”
Another wrote: “The engines/starters are built for auto start/stop. That’s the reason your owners manual tells you to wait 15 minutes after shutting the engine off to check the oil. There’s a check valve of sorts keeping the oil from immediately draining back into the oil pan.
“Kilmer is an idiot. He made a video telling people to wash their catalytic converters with dish soap.”
