Police have issued an update after a knife was found in a primary school pupil’s bag.

The knife was found at The Park Primary School, on Hollow Road in Kingswood on Thursday, May 15.

In an email to parents and guardians, headteacher Paul Rowsell said no child or adult had been harmed and the kitchen knife had been discovered “during the course of the day”.

Avon and Somerset Police said it had received reports a child had been found in possession of a kitchen knife.

A force spokesperson said: “A report that a child was found in possession of a kitchen knife at a primary school in South Gloucestershire earlier this week has been received.

“The knife was confiscated by school staff who then made the police and South Gloucestershire Council aware. No one was injured.

“We recognise how concerning an incident of this nature will be to parents and carers. However, it is something that is incredibly rare.”

The knife, which was in a bag belonging to a pupil in Year 5, was immediately confiscated by staff.

An email, sent just after 8am this morning, Friday, May 16, alerted the rest of the school community.

The email from Mr Rowsell said: “I am writing to inform you of an incident that took place yesterday.

“During the course of the day, a knife was discovered in the bag of a Year 5 pupil.

“This item was immediately confiscated by staff, and no child or adult was harmed at any time.

“The safety and wellbeing of all our pupils is always our highest priority and we acted promptly to ensure everyone remained safe.

“I am currently conducting a thorough investigation in line with our safeguarding policies and procedures.

“The Year 5 parents were notified yesterday but I wanted to be transparent with you as a school community and let you know that we are taking this very seriously.”

The Park Primary School told BristolLive: “On reports that a child was in possession of a knife in their bag, staff immediately confiscated the item safely. No one was harmed.”

South Gloucestershire Council, Avon and Somerset Police and South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Team were made aware of the incident and are working with Mr Rowsell who said: “We are taking this incident very seriously and are working with the relevant agencies to manage this sensitively and to safeguard all the children and staff in the school.”
