An emotional Emi Martinez applauds the fans
Emi Martinez was in tears after Aston Villa’s 2-0 win over Tottenham this evening.
It was the club’s final home game of the season, and Martinez took a few minutes to take it all in as he stood at the edge of his box, before Robin Olsen came over to congratulate him on the victory and clean sheet.
This was the fifth clean sheet Martinez has kept in the last eight league games, while Olsen also recorded a clean sheet himself before that run, in the 1-0 victory at Brentford.
Then, as he walked towards the Holte End, Martinez started to wipe his eyes after appearing to shed a tear or two.
He applauded fans around the stadium and slowly made his way back down the tunnel.
Leon Bailey was also visibly upset tonight, with his future in question after struggling for game time in the second half of the season.
Asked after full-time if Martinez and Bailey could leave the club this summer, Emery said: “Now we are focused on the matches we are playing. It is the last match here.
“I don’t know. We will see. We will see about the team, the players. They are responding and are so focused on how we are preparing each match.
“We have more points to play for against Manchester United. We will see how we can get better for the next season.”
Martinez and the rest of the Villa squad then walked around the pitch to thank supporters for their backing during the campaign.
Martinez signed a new long-term contract with Villa last August but is of interest to a number of clubs – including from Saudi Arabia – heading into the summer transfer window.
