Fish and chips, a quintessential British dish, is celebrated not just for its scrumptious taste but also for its profound ties to the nation’s heritage.

This beloved meal was so pivotal to British culture that during World War II it remained one of the few foods not subject to rationing, with troops often enjoying fish and chips before being deployed into combat.

And now, in the face of stiff competition, Bristol has been hailed as the top spot for fish and chips, outshining popular coastal towns, according to findings from Betway.

Bristol has clinched the accolade of being the UK’s fish and chips capital, taking into account factors such as vegan options, menu diversity and social media presence. Bristol scored of 60.6 out of 80.

Betway hailed Bristol as the “perfect place to enjoy a chippy with a picturesque view”, and even unveiled the city’s number one. Mario’s Fish Bar in Kingswood was declared the absolute best, bagging an impressive 4.8/5 stars from the judges.

In Bristol Live’s most recent best chip shop reader poll, Mario’s came out on top. In second place came Hamblins on Avonvale Road, Barton Hill, and coming third was Argus Fish Bar on West Street, Bedminster. They were followed by Fish and Fry on St Marks Road, Easton and Star Fish Bar on Bedminster Road.

In September last year, Guardian food critic Grace Dent said Noah’s was one of the ‘most delightful restaurants’ she’d been in years, in a rave review. BristolLive went along to test it ourselves in May last year.

Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal’s pursuit of crafting the perfect “chip” has only heightened the dish’s allure, leading to an array of variations and eateries specialising in fish and chips, reports the Mirror.
