A Bristol charity has launched its largest-ever fundraising campaign – and it includes a dinner with two renowned chefs.

The campaign – which is aiming to raise £35,000 ahead of World Hunger Day at the end of May – supports vulnerable 16 to 25-year-olds in the city, including care leavers, young asylum seekers and those recovering from homelessness.

The MAZI Project, which has delivered over 120,000 meals since its launch in 2021, is calling on Bristolians to join a series of events designed to raise awareness and funds.

Founder Melanie Vaxevanakis said: “This World Hunger Day [Wednesday, May 28], we’re asking everyone to join us in making nutritious food accessible to all young people in Bristol. Together, we can spark real change through the power of food.”

The campaign’s target includes £25,000 through online crowdfunding and a further £10,000 via in-person events.

Supporters can get involved by pledging donations, sponsoring events, or spreading awareness on social media.

Key events include a charity dinner featuring renowned chefs Noor Murad and Josh Eggleton, which will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at The Mount Without. Tickets start at £85, with proceeds supporting MAZI’s food justice initiatives.

The MAZI Project, which collaborates with over 30 local producers and partners, also runs accredited cooking courses under the “Nourishing Confidence” programme.

According to its data, 97% of participants reported increased confidence in cooking, while 92% said the meals had a positive impact on their mental health.

One young person supported by the charity said: “I never thought food would make me feel part of something, but it has.”
