A beautiful waterside picnic spot can be found just a short drive from Bristol – with everything from nature trails to cycling routes. Scenic Chew Valley Lake is the fifth-largest artificial lake in the UK and the largest artificial freshwater lake in the South West.
The reservoir was created in the early 1950s and provides much of the drinking water to Bristol and surrounding areas. It’s become become such an important site for wildlife that it’s been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area.
The lake was once farmland and has become a popular spot for trout fishing. Bristol Water Fisheries says the lake records stand at a huge 22lb 7oz for brown trout and 14lb 9oz for rainbow trout.
And there’s plenty to do if fishing isn’t your thing, with three main walking trails:
- The Grebe trail (1.2km) is a hard, level trail which offers potential sightings of Chaffinches and the White Marbled Butterfly
- The Bittern trail (1.5km from start to finish) is part boardwalk and part unsurfaced and boasts Woodpeckers, Leaf Beetles and Hoverflies
- The Recreational trail is the newest and longest trail (2.7km) and is accessible for bikes, prams and wheelchairs.
On the woodland walks visitors can expect to see a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees, including Sweet Chestnut, Beech, Sycamore, English Oak, and a host of birds, including Coal Tits, Treecreepers and Sparrowhawks, among the branches.

Chew Valley Lake is also home to the Chew Valley Sailing Club which welcomes new members. Meanwhile visitors with permits can birdwatch at five bird hides, where 260 species of bird can be spotted visiting the lake.
The lake is home to two picnic spots and two restaurants – The Woodford and Salt & Malt. Award-winning Salt & Malt is known for its freshly caught fish, and chips and The Woodford has lakeside views and serves locally sourced food.
Reservoir operator Bristol Water has put together a guide to the family-friendly nature trails at Chew Valley Lake for families heading there over half term, and is inviting people to cycle, walk or picnic there.
Kirsty Dunford, conservation, access and recreations Manager at Bristol Water, said: “With half term fast approaching we’re excited to welcome visitors to our gorgeous nature trails.
“Chew Valley Lake has something for people of all ages, including amazing scenery, wildlife and places to enjoy a meal, or picnic, with family and friends.”
