A father-of-two is stuck in Spain after falling off a balcony while on holiday. Matty Durbin, 36, a football coach and self-employed electrician from Somerset, suffered a serious accident in Spain last week.

He sustained fractures to his pelvis and back in four places and now finds himself stuck in a Spanish hospital, unable to return home. In response, Matty’s close friend Adam has launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to gather funds to cover the family’s travel costs and help him get back to the UK.

It would also help to provide support for his partner, and secure mobility aids when he gets back to the UK. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here

Adam said: “Many of you will know Matty Durbin as the passionate and dedicated coach of Clutton U10s, and a familiar face across Clutton FC. Whether he’s giving up his evenings to run training or cheering the kids on at the weekend, Matty is always there, a genuine community hero who never asks for anything in return.

“Last week, while away in Spain, Matty suffered a terrible accident. He fell from a balcony and fractured his pelvis and his back in four places. He’s currently stuck in Spain, unable to travel home, and faces a long, painful recovery.

“With no way to work for the foreseeable future, and additional costs building up abroad, his family are facing a tough few months.

“Anyone who knows Matty will know he’d be mortified we’re doing this – but the truth is, he needs a bit of help right now,” reports Somerset Live.

“He’s spent years giving his time and energy to others. Now it’s time for us to give a little back.”

Matty has been a long-time sponsor of youth football kits and training tops, and Adam notes he “is always first to help out when someone has faced injuries or difficult times in the past”.

“Not only is he a fellow coach but he’s also a huge Bristol City fan, a role model to the kids he coaches, and a cracking bloke. Let’s rally around him like he’s done for so many others,” said Adam.

The GoFundMe campaign for Matty has already seen more than £6,000 in donations.

“Matt has been completely overwhelmed by the support. He’s truly humbled by the messages, the donations, and the love that’s been pouring in, especially from people he’s never even met.

“It’s brought a real sense of hope and strength at a time when it’s needed most. On behalf of Matt and all of us behind this fundraiser, thank you for being part of this.

“Whether you donated, shared the page, or sent a kind word, it means the world. The football family and local community have once again shown just how special they are.”
