A main road near Bristol will be closed for three nights as a major scheme of works enters the next phase. Current works are “progressing well” in Bradley Stoke with a section of resurfacing due to be completed next week, reports South Gloucestershire Council.

The next step of the “active travel improvements” will see the current one-way system on Bradley Stoke Way removed overnight on May 31, and moved to between Baileys Court Roundabout and Webbs Wood Roundabout.

As part of the changes, there will be overnight works to implement a northbound closure, with road closures in place from 8pm-6am on the nights of on Saturday, May 31, Sunday, June 1 and Monday, June 2.

South Gloucestershire Council notified the public on its website, warning: “The works will involve activities that generate noise and vibration, and we apologise in advance for this disturbance and inconvenience.

“We recognise the impact of overnight works on residents and will ensure that any noise is kept as low as possible.

“Due to the scale of the works activity, we will also need to close the existing footway from 31 May, there will be no access to pedestrians or cyclists.”

There are two suggested diversion routes on a map provided by the council. The total duration of works in this area could go on for seven weeks as the work rolls out in the whole area.

South Gloucestershire Council explains: “The footway closure from May 31 and the one-way system for motorists from June 2 are expected to remain in place for seven weeks to support this next phase of works. After this the one-way system will move to the next section of Bradley Stoke Way.”

The council added: “The overnight closures for resurfacing works between Great Stoke roundabout and Baileys Court roundabout are continuing until Sunday 8 June, between the hours of 20:00 to 06:00.

“We apologise for the inconvenience of these improvement works and thank you for your ongoing patience.”

The works along Bradley Stoke Way are anticipated to continue until December 2026 according to the council’s website. The key improvements aim to:

  • Separate cycle lanes and footpaths to improving safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Enhanced pedestrian crossings to make it safer and easier for pedestrians and wheelchair users.
  • Improved bus stops, with shelters and better crossings for easier access.
  • Additional priority bus lane to minimising delays for buses.

The works are part of a wider scheme that also affects the A38 and Alveston Hill.
