Nadiem Amiri’s rise to stardom has been one of the highlights of the past Bundesliga season. Always forced on to the sidelines at Bayer Leverkusen, he took a risk during Die Werkself’s title winning season by leaving halfway to join relegation battlers 1. FSV Mainz 05.

How that transfer has paid off. Amiri immediately became one of Mainz’s most important players and played a key role as Mainz shocked everyone to compete for Champions League football and eventually end up in the Conference League. Furthermore, Amiri’s exploits did not go unnoticed by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who decided to call up the 28-year-old to the Germany squad for the first time in his career during the March international break and hand him his debut.

Nor was this a one off. Amiri followed that call up with another in June as Germany looks to compete to win the UEFA Nations League. Unfortunately, Germany’s official twitter account posted this update shortly after Amiri joined the squad:

Squad Update Nadiem Amiri is leaving today due to adductor issues.

Get well soon, Nadiem!

It really is a shame that Amiri could not crown a phenomenal season with solidifying a place with Germany. With Amiri’s injury alongside that of Angelo Stiller, the midfield is looking rather thin, particularly as it looks as if Germany will not call up a replacement. Who will be the starting duo against Portugal? Could the Bayern Munich duo of Pavlović and Goretzka get the nod?
