Jo Henderson, owner of Care Beyond The Chair Ltd, is urging salons to prioritise mental health awareness.
She is sharing her story following National Hairdressing Mental Health Awareness Day on May 27.
Ms Henderson, who has been managing her own mental health for the past six years, is passionate about spreading awareness on mental health education.
She said: “Through spreading awareness about mental illnesses, I hope to make a difference to the way in which people view mental illness and the impact that social stigma can have upon the lives of many.”
Ms Henderson has launched a website, carebeyondthechairltd.com, which includes educational packages aimed at stylists but available to everyone.
She has also gained qualifications in mental health first aid, mental health advocacy in the workplace, and mental health awareness.
She added: “I believe that communication is the key and if you can communicate with an open-minded approach then perhaps people may find it easier to just be kind.”
