Oldham Athletic have become the final club to book their place in next season’s League Two following a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Southend United in the National League play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.

Oldham, who finished the regular season in fifth place, drew 1-1 in normal time against the Shrimpers as Joe Garner’s penalty early in the second half cancelled out an early own goal from Manny Monthe.

Southend re-took the lead early in the second half but a quickfire Oldham double from James Norwood and Kian Harratt turned the tie around.

There are Rovers links to both sides. Southend are managed by former Gas coach Kevin Maher, while popular ex-Pirates midfielder Jordan Rossiter is on loan at Oldham and came on as a substitute.

Micky Mellon’s side’s promotion means that Rovers now know every team they will face in the fourth tier next season, with fixture release day set for Thursday, June 26.

The Gas played Oldham the last time they were in League Two in the 2021/22 campaign, winning 1-0 at the Mem and losing 2-1 at Boundary Park. They were relegated out for the Football League that term and have spent three seasons in the fifth tier.

Barnet are the other club to be promoted from the National League after they won the title comfortably while Shrewsbury Town, Cambridge United and Crawley Town were relegated from League One alongside Rovers.
