Check out the tips and best bets for Saturday’s rescheduled and revamped Queensland Derby day with a triple G1 treat at Eagle Farm supported by action at Flemington, Randwick, Pinjarra Scarpside and Morphettville Parks.
BEST BETS
Flemington R5 No.3 Jimmy The Bear
Jimmy The Bear (3) is on the quick back-up after winning well at Caulfield last Saturday. That followed an excellent 2nd to War Machine on resumption, so he’s clearly come back in terrific order. He’s well-weighted under the conditions of this race, with the barrier the only real query.
Tom Prebble (59kg)
P & M Payne
6yoG (ch) Jimmy Creed x Belvedere Road
Randwick R8 No.2 Front Page
History suggests it takes a good horse to win this race and Front Page (2) more than fits that bill. Didn’t handle the trip across to West Australia last start but prior to that he ran second in The Galaxy. About a length behind him that day was Briasa and Front Page carried half a kilo more than him. Don’t worry about the 59kg he’s got here.
Nick Heywood (59kg)
Matthew Dale
8yoG (ch) Magnus x Stacey Lee
BEST VALUE
Flemington R9 No.4 Marble Nine
Marble Nine (4) comes back from a couple of handy sprints where he has run well. It was a bunched finish to the Listed Straight Six (1200m) on a shifty track here last start but he stuck to his guns well and has seemingly drawn ideally out wide.
Hannah Edgley (61.5kg)
L & T & W Corstens & Larkin
4yoG (br) Kobayashi x Aura Lee
Randwick R3 No.2 Shohisha
It’s a very weird set-up for Shohisha (2) going from 1100m up to a mile but her breeding would suggest it suits, being out of a mare that won the Epona Stakes. There’s a clear lack of speed here and her best performances have been when up on the pace, so I think she may lead. Talented filly and that was on display when fifth to Lady Shenandoah, Lady Of Camelot and Lilac two starts back.
Tom Sherry (59kg)
David Payne
3yoF (bay/brown) Supido x Consommateur
