A Merseyside Chinese takeaway was fined £80,000 for employing people illegally.
New Oriental Stir Fry on Queen Street in Tranmere, Birkenhead, offers a wide range of Chinese food. According to its website, the takeaway “serves some of the best Chinese food in noodles, soup, duck, and curry dishes.”
It added: “Our chefs are well known for their excellent Chinese cuisine, when it comes to food we are experts in choosing the colour, aroma, flavour, and taste. We believe food is not only taste but also a work of art for its aesthetic value.”
However the business was named as one of a number given civil penalties towards the end of last year for employing illegal workers. The information, published on the government’s website on May 31, shows the takeaway was fined £80,000.
The latest data published by the government is for illegal working civil penalties between October 1 and December 31 2024. Across the UK, there were 489 penalties issued, 771 illegal workers found, and £29.2m in penalties issued.
The takeaway is one of two businesses in Wirral to receive fines between October and December 2024. Portofino, an Italian restaurant in New Brighton, was fined £180,000.
The list of employers is published every three months. It details fines given to “employers who have not paid or are not making regular payments towards a penalty 28 days after they have exhausted all their objection and/or appeal rights.”
Fines can also be given to “employers who have been served with a second or further penalty once they have exhausted all their objection and/or appeal rights regardless of whether any payment has been made.”
The penalties are published once any appeal rights are exhausted. New Oriental Stir Fry were approached for comment.
