A man was arrested after a taxi was stolen by a passenger in Birmingham.

The driver was threatened before the vehicle was taken in Bromford Lane in Hodge Hill.

It happened just after 2am today, Sunday, June 8.

West Midlands Police said officers ‘rapidly responded’ to the incident.

The car was tracked to near Hodge Hill Road less than ten minutes later.

A brief foot chase followed before a 19-year-old man was detained thanks to help from a police dog.

He remained in custody today having been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, drink driving and failing to stop.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We’ve arrested a man after rapidly responding to a taxi being stolen in Birmingham this morning.

“We were alerted to a taxi driver being threatened by a passenger along Bromford Lane, Hodge Hill, just after 2am.

“The vehicle was then taken but officers – alongside the dog unit – were quickly on the trail and tracked the car near Hodge Hill Road less than ten minutes later.

“Following a brief foot chase one of our crime-fighting canines helped to detain a 19-year-old man.

“He was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, drink driving and failing to stop.

“He currently remains in custody for questioning.”
