It is being held on the northbound carriageway between junction six for Birmingham and the A38 and junction seven for Birmingham North and Walsall.
National Highways West Midlands are reporting delays in excess of 30 minutes and congestion for approximately two miles on approach to the incident.
They are asking motorists to allow extra time if they are travelling in the area.
