Host Richard Madeley issued a health update while working on Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain. The 69-year-old, who works alongside Susanna Reid, 54, sparked concern as his voice sounded different from normal.
The smooth talker was sounding quite husky and run-down, with him seemingly struggling to talk. As he tried to introduce a new segment of the ITV show, about Reform UK’s new party chairman, Susanna teased: “If we can still hear you that is.” Richard laughed before explaining that he is doing everything he can to make it better.
He shared: “Well, I’m just trying honey and water, which someone suggested to me. Someone said ‘give him some honey in hot water’, so yeah maybe.” Susanna replied: “We can try and get Laura [Tobin] to send some lavender honey from where she is.”
Then Richard surprisingly issued an apology, saying: “Well if it’s annoying you, I’m really sorry. Hopefully it will be better tomorrow.” His co-star replied: “No, it’s not, don’t worry.” But Richard quipped: “You can’t even hear what I’m saying, it’s great, they’ll love it!”
As well as his voice sounding different, Madeley has also been presenting the ITV show this week with a cast on his arm. While he has been trying to hide it, the end of it has still been seen poking out of the sleeve of his smart suit jacket.
On Monday, Susanna joked as she demanded: “Richard, you better explain. You’ve come back into the studio… That looks sore.” He replied in jest, saying: “I thought you were going to say did I have a good break!” They both laughed before he added: “It’s a double fracture of the wrist.”
“I was walking quite quickly down a steep pavement in France on Friday, and the pavement was loose,” he shared. “It flipped up and it flipped me forward and I thought am I going to win or will gravity win? And gravity won and I hit the ground hard. So yeah I’ve got a double fracture and we’ll see how it goes.”
Concerned, Susanna asked if it was sore. Richard replied: “I’m not discussing the pain threshold, we just don’t think about pain.” “Okay, we’re just going to distract ourselves. It’s good to have you back,” Susanna added.
