Roger Chubbock, who dedicated more than 30 years to the Hales and Loddon Cricket Club, died at the age of 62 last October after suffering with a brain tumour.

And on Sunday June 8 – on what would have been his 63th birthday – the club held a special match in his memory with many of the players who knew him.

Pete Dye, Hales and Loddon Cricket Club chairman, said: “Roger was an outstanding member of our club, whether scoring, playing, or socialising, he was such a huge part of all and everything we are.

“To give over 30 years service to the club was an amazing effort, and he was fully deserving of his Honorary Scorer title.”

More than 150 people attended the day and an auction and raffle helped to raise over £1,150 for the Brain Tumour Research and Cancer Research UK charities.

Mr Dye added: “So many people turned out for him, past players, and his many friends from Norton and Thurlton, showing just how much he meant to people.

“Other members of his family were there and helped with the raffle and barbecue in what was the most perfect of days for him.”

Mr Chubbock was diagnosed with a high-grade tumour – glioblastoma – in 2023.

He underwent an operation to remove the tumour and intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy but lost his fight to the cancer in October.

He served his beloved cricket team from the 1970s to 2014, winning clubman of the year at least three times and he was delighted to receive the award from club president Sir Nicholas Bacon in the mid-1980s.

Mr Chubbock’s sister Karen thanked the club for organising the event, saying: “He would have been so proud that the club put on a special game for him.”

A team in memory of Mr Chubbock was made up of mainly ex-players, and current veterans Milton Lindsay and Matt Plummer, both still playing after a combined 80 years with the club.

They took on the current side in a 35 over game played in “excellent spirit” and won in style.
