The herbicide glyphosate, sold by Bayer, remains highly controversial in the public eye.
In response to the study, the European Commission said it will ask the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to assess whether the new evidence, in light of all existing data, warrants a change in glyphosate’s risk or hazard classification. „If needed, we will adjust or withdraw the authorization for glyphosate,“ said a Commission spokesperson. The study, published in the journal Environmental Health, reports an elevated cancer risk when test animals were chronically exposed to glyphosate – even at doses equivalent to the EU-defined safe daily intake.
