Birmingham City Council said speeding and dangerous driving were common issues in the Holt Road area of the city centre as motorists cut through to avoid the main Dartmouth island junction.

It said increased activity was expected in the area now known as the Knowledge Quarter with Aston University expanding its premises.

The authority said the development was likely to result in a significant rise in ‘pedestrian movement’ through the Holt Street junction and surrounding roads.

It is introducing a trial closure of Holt Street at its junction with Lister Street from later this month.

It will be implemented through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) and means there will be a “modal” filter at the junction allowing only cycles to pass through.

In a letter, the city council said: “With increasing numbers of university students and school pupils in the area, the proposal will contribute to improving the environment for these road users by prioritising safer and sustainable travel.

“It will also enhance health and wellbeing, making walking, wheeling, and cycling the natural first choice for everyday short journeys.”

It continued: “It is intended that this experimental scheme will be implemented in the week commencing Monday, June 23.

“There will then be a six-month statutory consultation period as part of the ETRO process where comments relating to the scheme can be formally submitted.”

A public consultation on the plans is available on the Birmingham Be Heard website.
