The Met Office’s forecast for today reads: “A fine and mostly sunny day with high cloud at times.
“Feeling very warm in the sunshine, but a little breezier than yesterday. Maximum temperature 25C.
The forecast for tomorrow reads: “Any cloud or mist clearing relatively quickly, leaving a fine day with plenty of strong sunshine. Feeling very warm with light and variable winds.”
The Met Office outlook for Thursday to Saturday says: “High pressure will build bringing a mixture of sunshine and cloudier periods. Increasingly very warm and feeling hot in the strong sunshine by Friday with pollen levels becoming very high.”
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson said: “The rising temperatures this week are a combination of several factors.
“Over the next few days, settled weather and warm sunshine will allow temperatures to rise day on day.
“Temperatures will then rise further towards the end of the week as winds turn more southerly and even warmer air over continental Europe will be drawn across the UK.
“We could very well see several places exceeding 30C, which will be the highest temperatures of the year so far.”
How long will the UK heatwave last?
High pressure is expected to move away from the UK early next week, resulting in temperatures falling.
Mr Wisson added: “Temperatures are likely to peak in the low 30s this weekend before easing sometime early week.
“Some forecast models even allow temperatures to rise into the mid 30s by Monday. While this is feasible, it is considered a lower-likelihood scenario.”
