A keen walker has recommended a “relatively easy” route that offers stunning views of rolling hills and heather-covered moorlands.

The Blorenge hill walk has been described as “an ideal day walk” in South Wales, and the car park used as the starting point is only an hour away from Bristol.

WalesOnline journalist Portia Jones said the walk is one of her favourite short hikes, located near the “lively market town” of Abergavenny where foodies can also find a Michelin-starred restaurant, acclaimed bakery and award-winning hotel.

Portia wrote : “Blorenge is a prominent hill in the southeastern corner of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, overlooking the valley of the River Usk.

“The Blorenge walk is a gentle hike from the car park across the mountaintop, taking around two hours and suitable for older children to walk. The car park’s proximity to the summit makes this a relatively easy walk compared to most in Bannau Brycheiniog.

“Stroll around swathes of heather moorland, looking out over the rolling Black Mountains and signs of the area’s industrial heritage.

“If you’re kicking off your walk from the car park, keep an eye out for a rather quirky sight nearby – a memorial to a horse. How very Welsh.”

There are several walks in the area, but walking app AllTrails recommends the ‘Blorenge Short Circular’ as an ‘easy’ option that covers 5km and takes about 90 minutes on average to complete.

It starts at the Fox Hunter Car Park, postcode NP4 9SR. One recent visitor wrote in a Google review of the location: “Lovely walk to the trig point at just over 550 metres, great views all around and then back to Keepers pond for a picnic.”

Another agreed: “The views from hear are spectacular and all trails are well sign posted. You can see Abergavenny, Golivon, Keepers Pond, Blorange Trig Point Gyfdd Mountain. Fantastic! Will definitely be back.”

More experienced ramblers can try the 7-mile ‘Blorenge Circular’ walk, which starts from a car park by Keeper’s Pond, a small lake, and also encompasses another pond known as the Punchbowl.

The path then ascends, winding around towards the summit of the Blorenge. Portia said once at the top, there are “epic views of the surrounding mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog, including Sugar Loaf, Corn Du, and Pen y Fan”.
