The warm weather is expected to continue in the West Midlands as weather watchdog, the Met Office, predicts high temperatures, more sun ahead and an incoming heatwave.
A heat-health alert was also issued for the West Midlands region yesterday, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warning that there may be an increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people during the predicted heatwave.
The UK Health Security Agency issued the yellow heath-health alert for most of England from midday on Wednesday (June 18) until 6pm on Sunday.
The weekly forecast predicts high temperatures of 27C, with ‘light variable winds’ and cooler nights.
The update comes as the group says that a heatwave is expected in many parts of the UK, including Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and much of Staffordshire.
Talking about the heatwave, Dr Gillian Kay, Senior Scientist at the Met Office and lead author explains, said: “The chance of exceeding 40°C has been rapidly increasing, and it is now over 20 times more likely than it was in the 1960s.
“Because our climate continues to warm, we can expect the chance to keep rising.”
The heatwave is expected to peak by the weekend before temperatures ease early next week.
Dr Kay continued: “We estimate a 50-50 chance of seeing a 40°C day again in the next 12 years.
“We also found that temperatures several degrees higher than we saw in July 2022 are possible in today’s climate.”
