Germany went with a very different-looking squad against England at the U-21 EUROs on Wednesday. Despite massive rotation, Antonio Di Salvo’s squad succeeded once again, now heading into the knockouts in top form. Within the rotation though, there was a mix of performances from great to not so great.
Jersey Swap: Omari Hutchinson
Alex Scott played a great midfield role and was clinical in England’s goal. However, that never would have happened without a wonder run by Omari Hutchinson. A highlight reel set of dribbles and pass were the true standout. On the other hand, Elias Baum got absolutely outclassed in that duel.
Der Kaiser: Tjark Ernst
While it is easy to give this award to Lukas Ullrich, who gave Ansgar Knauff a brilliant ball that created Germany’s first goal, the award goes to Tjark Ernst. England put in a brigade of shots towards Germany’s net and Ullrich stood strong, only conceding a virtually unstoppable attempt. Ernst stood on his head with some brilliant saves.
Fußballgott: Caspar Jander
The FC Nürnberg talent, Caspar Jander had a great match for the U-21s on Wednesday. He was massively important in build-up play and was incredibly strong in winning possession. He might fall under the radar for many, but the keen eye will notice that he was essential in holding the Three Lions from further attacks.
Der Bomber: Nelson Weiper
Nelson Weiper was the best available forward for this award, as the true best forward is awarded Meister of the Match. Weiper did well to score Germany’s second goal, but was otherwise poor in duels and couldn’t string much passes together for his offense. He will be happy to get out of this match with a win and a goal.
Meister of the Match: Ansgar Knauff
The Eintracht Frankfurt attacker has been held to limited minutes so far this tournament. With a wealth of other attacking options, Ansgar Knauff had to impress in his brief appearance. Knauff absolutely did with a stunner of a goal off of a great touch and volley as well as assisting Germany’s second goal.
