Roberto Duran has revealed who he believes to be the greatest fighter of all time.
The Panamanian great entered the paid ranks back in 1968 and would embark on a glittering professional career that would go on to span across five decades.
He won world titles in four weight classes throughout the course of his tenure, capturing world honours for the first time when he defeated Scottish icon Ken Buchanan in 1975 to claim the WBA lightweight title.
After making twelve defences of his lightweight crown, Duran made the move up to welterweight in 1980 to dethrone WBC champion Sugar Ray Leonard in what was arguably the best win of his career.
He could not repeat this in their rematch just five months later however, as Leonard forced him to quit in one of the most memorable moments in boxing history, perhaps better known as the ‘No Mas’ fight.
Duran will go down as an all-time great, but in an interview with ESNEWS, he declared Sugar Ray Robinson as the best to ever lace up the gloves.
“Sugar Ray Robinson, he’s the best! Sugar Ray Robinson is the best!”
Robinson is often regarded as being the greatest fighter to have ever laced up the gloves, although he is also remembered for the influence he had on the sport and the legacy that he created for himself.
‘Sugar Ray’ fought on no less than 201 occasions throughout his career, reigning as the world welterweight champion between 1946 and 1951 before making the move up to middleweight shortly after, where he would win the world title at 160lbs five times in a nine year period.
