Well, it looks like summer’s decided to show up early and make a grand entrance – and not exactly the subtle kind. This weekend, much of Spain (yes, that includes sunny Alicante and large swathes of Valencia) is bracing for a proper roasting, with temperatures set to flirt with a sizzling 40ºC.
The lovely folks at AEMET (Spain’s weather agency – no, not a new tapas bar) have issued a yellow alert for this Saturday 21 June in the Marina Alta region. Coastal spots and inland towns alike are expecting highs of up to 37ºC. That’s in the shade, mind you.
What’s to blame? A hot air mass sweeping in from Africa, turning up the thermostat and giving us all a taste of what’s to come. While this isn’t technically a “heatwave” just yet, the side effects are much the same: sticky nights, heavy air, and a real risk of heat-related health issues if you’re not careful.

So, what do the locals do when it gets this hot?
Simple. They head for the water, find some shade, or cling to their air conditioning units like their lives depend on it. And frankly, that’s the right idea.
Here are a few golden rules if you want to avoid melting this weekend:
- Avoid direct sun from noon to 5pm. Yes, we know you came for a tan, but there’s no glory in turning into a lobster.
- Hydrate like a champion – and no, sangria doesn’t count. Water is your best friend, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.
- Dress for the heat: light, breathable clothing, hats, sunnies, and lashings of high-factor sunscreen.
- Skip the HIIT workouts and beach jogs. It’s not the time to chase your personal best – unless it’s a record for longest siesta.
A tale of two Spains
While the Mediterranean and central parts of the country will be sizzling, our friends up north and in the northwest will be enjoying a more spring-like climate. So, if you’re dreaming of a cool breeze, Asturias might just be calling your name.
Looking ahead, things should ease up a little from Monday onwards – but don’t get your hopes up too high. The mercury’s not planning a dramatic drop any time soon. Looks like summer’s come in with a bang, and it’s here to stay.
Cool heads prevail
A bit of sun is lovely, but overdoing it in this heat can be risky. The key is to enjoy the good weather sensibly – ideally from a shady terrace or waist-deep in a pool. And if you can’t escape the heat, there’s always the classic plan B: sofa, film, and the glorious hum of air con.
Wherever you are, take it easy this weekend. Stay cool, stay safe (check AEMET) – and don’t forget the ice cubes.
