Though goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe remains on international duty with England’s Under-21s, Sam Dalby, Charlie Warren, Xavier Simons and Richard Taylor were all put through their paces by Bolton’s medical staff in the first day of preparations.

Josh Sheehan and Luke Southwood, who have both been on international duty with Wales and Northern Ireland, were also absent on day one at Lostock.

Wanderers fly out to Spain next weekend for a warm weather training camp which will conclude with their first pre-season friendly, against South African side Orlando Pirates.

More new additions are anticipated – but head coach Steven Schumacher has been vocal on the players he has brought through the doors already, as he prepares for his first full season in charge of the Whites.

On Sam Dalby

“Sam is the centre-forward of a profile that we didn’t have in the squad.

“He’s a physical type of player, he is really good as a link player, someone who can be used as a target man, but his standout quality for me when I watched all of his stuff was, when the ball goes wide, he’s always in the middle of the goal.

“I was forever saying that to the centre-forwards last year, and we feel as though having him in the squad gives us an option to cross the ball and have somebody get on the end of them.

“He had a brilliant year for Dundee United, he played consistent minutes, which helps, and got himself a load of goals, so we wanted to bring that type of form to us.”

On Xavier Simons

“He’s a really talented footballer, someone who has had a really good upbringing at Chelsea, came through the academy there and got himself a really good move to Hull City in the Championship where he played a good number of games.

“He went out on loan a couple of times but he is a young player who we think has got plenty of room for development.

“He is an all-round type, a box-to-box midfielder, who can do a little bit of everything.

“Again, he is a player who we’re excited about and one we are going to try and improve where we can.”

On Richard Taylor

“He’s physical, he is fast and he’s aggressive. He is left-footed, so that gives us a good bit of balance and we think he can play either as a centre-back or as a left-back for us.

“He has had a different sort of career path to Xavier but we still think he has got room to develop too.

“He is young, only 24, but young from a footballing perspective, and someone we think we can work with.”

On Charlie Warren

“He’s an exciting young prospect. He came in on trail last season and played for the B Team with Andrew Tutte and Andy Taylor. I watched him play against Blackburn and he caught the eye. He was impressive.

“He is a good size, he is left-footed, he moves well, scored a load of goals, Liam Watson, one of our scouts, watched him a lot and was keen to bring him in.

“For somebody so young it was a really minimal fee that we paid, and we felt it was a gamble worth taking.

“We don’t know what his career path is going to be like yet. He is going to train with the first team for the first few weeks, and then we make our decision from there on whether he goes with the B team, he stays with us, or he goes out on loan.

“But the opportunity is there for him, as it is for other young players.”

On Teddy Sharman-Lowe

“We’re getting a really talented player. He went out on loan last year with Doncaster Rovers and he was exceptional.

“We had a lot of conversations early in the window, as soon as the season had finished, in fact, about the type of goalkeeper we wanted with Owain (Fon Williams) and with Fergal (Harkin).

“We had a list of goalkeepers that we wanted to go through and try and make sure we get the right choice for that role, so we watched a lot of stuff on a number of goalkeepers, and Teddy was the outstanding candidate.

“We spoke to him, we had a good meeting with him, and he was really keen to come here and continue his development,” he said. “He is somebody who’s really talented, he’s a really good shot-stopper, he’s a good size, good at coming for crosses, he’s excellent with his feet, both short and long, so we’re really excited about working with him.”
